Breast cancer deaths occur because of metastasis. This is when breast cancer moves from the original site, the breast, to other areas of the body. Most commonly, breast cancer spreads to the brain, bone, liver, and/or lungs. Patients whose breast cancer has metastasized are considered Stage IV. There is currently no cure and the median mortality rate is 2-3 years. In the United States alone, more than 40,000 vibrant lives are lost each year.
Despite these stark realities, the most widely known breast cancer fundraising movements direct a small percentage of their research funds to researching Stage IV breast cancer. Instead, their primary focus is on prevention, awareness, and early detection. Twisted Pink and those who support our organization want to impact the 40,000 U.S. citizens who will lose their life to breast cancer each and every year. While only 6-10% of initial breast cancer diagnoses are metastatic, 20-30% of patients diagnosed with earlier stage breast cancer will eventually develop stage IV breast cancer and die.
Twisted Pink is committed to funding metastatic breast cancer researchers who are willing to collaborate with other Institutions, including patients in their research model. We believe this collaboration and model of funding will speed research results and lead to better understanding of metastasis and a cure to the many types of breast cancer quicker.
Please join this critical effort by making a donation to Twisted Pink! We currently operate 100% on volunteers and are supported by individuals and corporations who believe in our mission. Twisted Pink donates 100% of our Net Profits to metastatic breast cancer research that follow the concepts of the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative.
